Assistant Professor of Philosophy

OverviewThe Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Philosophy. The appointment is tenable from September 2026. Salary is no less than £68,087 per annum; the salary scale is described on the LSE website. This role is based in the Department but involves extensive collaboration with LSE’s Global School of Sustainability (GSoS).Commitment and environment
The department aims to do philosophy in a way that is continuous with the social and natural sciences and socially relevant, and to foster an inclusive environment for philosophical debate with a wide range of perspectives. The appointee will contribute to the intellectual life of the Department and the School by publishing outstanding research, delivering excellent teaching, taking on administrative roles, and participating in wider School activities.ResponsibilitiesPublish internationally excellent research and demonstrate the potential for world-leading publications in philosophy.Provide high-quality teaching and contribute to the Department’s core teaching provision; develop new course material, including a course in philosophy and sustainability.Engage in administrative duties as assigned and participate in the wider activities of the Department and School.Collaborate with LSE’s Global School of Sustainability (GSoS) and contribute to its five research themes.Qualifications and requirementsPhD in philosophy or a closely related field by the start date or soon after; evidence of a clear trajectory toward internationally excellent publications in leading journals or with leading book publishers.A proven commitment to high-quality teaching and to fostering a positive learning environment, demonstrated by feedback from students and colleagues.A track record or trajectory of research with a substantial connection to sustainability and the ability to develop a new course on philosophy and sustainability.The ability to make a substantial, research-led contribution to the Department’s core teaching provision.A well-developed plan for future research that could result in world-leading publications.Selection criteriaFurther criteria for shortlisting are described in the person specification attached to the vacancy on LSE’s online recruitment system.
