Assistant Building Surveyor
Role Overview
The Assistant Building Surveyor will support the delivery of building surveying services across a managed property estate. Working under the guidance of senior surveyors, the role will provide practical experience across building surveying, inspections, project delivery, statutory compliance, design, specification, tendering and contract administration.
The role is suited to an early-career building surveyor seeking structured professional development and progression towards Chartered status through the RICS Building Surveying pathway.
The postholder will contribute to maintaining, improving and safeguarding a diverse property estate, helping to ensure buildings are safe, compliant, well-maintained and fit for purpose.
Key Responsibilities
Building Surveys & Inspections
- Assist with condition surveys, measured surveys, compliance inspections and building pathology assessments.
- Undertake site inspections and record accurate technical information.
- Support the preparation of schedules of condition, defect reports and maintenance recommendations.
- Collect and input accurate site information into relevant property and asset management systems.
- Assist with identifying defects, maintenance requirements and potential remedial works.
Project & Contract Support
- Assist senior surveyors with feasibility studies, option appraisals and project development.
- Support the preparation of outline designs, specifications and tender documentation.
- Assist with contract administration and project coordination.
- Monitor works on site and contribute to progress reporting.
- Assist with valuations, snagging, completion and handover processes.
- Liaise with contractors, consultants, building users and other stakeholders to support effective project delivery.
Design & Technical Documentation
- Assist with measured surveys and the production and updating of drawings.
- Maintain floor plans, asset information and CAD drawings.
- Produce design information, specifications, schedules and other technical documentation.
- Assist with applications and submissions relating to planning, building control and other statutory consents.
Professional Development
- Participate in structured training, supervision and professional development.
- Work towards professional membership and Chartered status through the RICS Building Surveying pathway.
- Maintain appropriate CPD records and actively develop technical and professional knowledge.
- Keep up to date with relevant legislation, regulations, professional standards and industry guidance.
Financial & Procurement Responsibilities
- Follow relevant procurement procedures, frameworks and financial controls.
- Assist with monitoring project expenditure and budgets.
- Provide regular information on project financial performance.
- Support the delivery of projects within agreed budgets and timescales.

Qualifications & Professional Development
Essential
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Building Surveying, Building Studies, Construction or a related built-environment discipline.
- Working towards professional membership and/or Chartered status through the RICS Building Surveying pathway or an equivalent professional route.
Desirable
- Experience of maintaining an RICS APC diary or equivalent professional development record.
- Evidence of structured professional development towards Chartered status.
Experience & Knowledge
Essential
- Experience gained through university projects, placements, internships or early employment within surveying, construction, property or a related discipline.
- Experience undertaking site work, inspections or building surveying activities.
- Experience preparing technical documentation, reports, schedules or drawings.
- Experience working with contractors, consultants or other project stakeholders.
- Experience attending site meetings and inspections.
