ASSISTANT MECHANICAL ENGINEER (BUILDING SERVICES)
Carbon60 is looking to recruit an experienced Assistant Mechanical Engineer (Building Services) to support the delivery of mechanical building services projects for a public sector organisation based in Preston.
ROLE: Assistant Mechanical Engineer (Building Services)
PAY RATE: -16.70/ per hour PAYE
CONTRACT TYPE: Temporary (27th July - October)
LOCATION: Preston (Agile / Hybrid Working - attendance at County Hall required as business needs dictate)
THE ROLE:
The successful candidate will support the delivery, design, specification, and project management of mechanical building services projects across a diverse property portfolio. Working as part of a multidisciplinary Building Design Team, you will assist in managing planned and reactive building services works while providing technical support across a range of mechanical systems.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with a strong background in building services who combines practical engineering knowledge with good IT and administrative skills. Candidates with either a mechanical or electrical building services background will be considered, provided they have experience working across building services environments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support the delivery of mechanical building services projects from design through to completion
Manage small-scale building services projects, ensuring delivery within programme, budget, and quality expectations
Respond to reactive issues involving heating, hot water, electrical services, and other critical building systems by coordinating contractors and ensuring timely resolution
Assist with the design and specification of mechanical building services including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, hot water, gas, BMS, and legionella mitigation systems
Provide technical advice and guidance to internal stakeholders and multidisciplinary project teams
Liaise with contractors, consultants, suppliers, and internal departments throughout project delivery
Support Building Services Engineers and the Principal M&E Engineer in delivering ongoing maintenance and project work
Act as Duty Engineer on a rota, providing a point of contact for reactive maintenance issues
Monitor contractor performance and ensure works comply with current standards and regulations
Maintain accurate project records, reports, and documentation using internal maintenance systems and Microsoft Office applications
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Recognised vocational or professional qualification in Mechanical Building Services (or equivalent practical experience)
Experience delivering Mechanical Building Services projects or maintenance works
Good understanding of building services systems including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, hot water, gas, and BMS
Experience managing small-scale building services projects
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Good communication and stakeholder management abilities
Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Office applications
Experience using maintenance management systems such as PAMS, PPM systems, or similar CAFM portals
Valid DBS check (or willingness to obtain one)
DESIRABLE:
Experience working within the public sector or local authority environment
Membership of a relevant professional body (such as CIBSE or equivalent)
Experience managing external contractors and consultants
Knowledge of current building services legislation, regulations, and compliance standards
Experience across a broad range of building services disciplines including air conditioning, fire alarms, lifts, heating systems, and ventilation
Experience providing technical guidance across multidisciplinary engineering teams
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Agile and hybrid working arrangement
Office-based at County Hall with travel to sites as required
Working across a varied public sector property portfolio
Collaboration with internal design teams, contractors, consultants, and stakeholders
Participation in a Duty Engineer rota supporting reactive maintenance services
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Combination of office-based and site-based working
Site inspections across operational buildings
Occasional access to plant rooms, roof spaces, and service areas
Use of laptops, mobile devices, and surveying equipment
Travel between sites when required
