About the Role
We are looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Assistant Accountant to join our clients finance team. This is a key role with a strong focus on cash flow management, credit control, and Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) tax, supporting the smooth financial operation of the business.
The ideal candidate will be confident working with transactional finance, comfortable liaising with both internal stakeholders and external parties, and able to take ownership of cash-critical processes.
Key Responsibilities
Cash Flow & Financial Control
- Actively monitor and manage daily and weekly cash flow
- Prepare cash flow forecasts and highlight potential risks or improvements
- Support month-end processes
- Assist with budgeting and variance analysis where required
- Manage sales ledger and debtor balances
- Proactively chase outstanding payments and resolve queries efficiently
- Build and maintain strong relationships with customers to ensure timely payments
- Maintain accurate records of communications and payment agreements
- Manage CIS processes including verification of subcontractors
- Calculate CIS deductions accurately and in compliance with HMRC rules
- Prepare and submit monthly CIS returns
- Handle CIS statements and respond to subcontractor queries
- Assist with purchase ledger, bank reconciliations, and ledger postings
- Support audits and provide information to external accountants where required
- Ensure financial records are accurate, compliant, and well maintained
- Previous experience in an Assistant Accountant or similar finance role
- Strong hands-on experience with cash flow management and credit control
- Proven experience working with CIS tax (essential)
- Good understanding of UK accounting practices
- Confident user of accounting software and Excel
- Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills
- Strong communication skills and confidence dealing with customers and HMRC
- AAT qualified or currently studying (or equivalent experience)
- Experience within construction, contracting, or related sectors
