The Surgical Division is highly supportive of pharmacy input and recognises the critical role pharmacists play in optimising patient outcomes. There are excellent opportunities for professional growth and development within this area.LUHFT employs over 120 pharmacists across three sites, delivering clinical pharmacy services to all major specialties. The role involves leadership and delivery of a high-quality, proactive, patient-focused clinical pharmacy service to surgical wards, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe and effective medicines use.The post is supported by fully integrated electronic systems and a commitment to innovation and continuous improvement.Responsibilities
Lead and deliver a high-quality, proactive, and patient-focused clinical pharmacy service to surgical wards, ensuring safe and effective medicines use in line with best practice and national guidance.Assist the Lead Divisional Pharmacist for Surgery in the development, implementation, and evaluation of pharmacy services and medicines management across the surgical specialties.Provide safe, effective, and advanced clinical pharmacy support to surgical wards; contribute to service development and improvement initiatives.Support clinical training, supervision, and mentorship of junior pharmacists, pre-registration trainees, and other pharmacy staff within the surgical division.Contribute to the development of clinical guidelines, protocols, and audits to improve patient safety and outcomes in surgical care.Provide non-medical prescribing services within the surgical division, working as an independent prescriber to manage and optimise patients’ medication regimens.Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless pharmaceutical care across the surgical patient pathway, including pre-operative and post-operative care.Support the safe and effective use of high-risk medicines and participate in therapeutic drug monitoring relevant to surgical care (e.g., antimicrobials such as gentamicin).Participate in service development initiatives and quality improvement projects to enhance the role of pharmacy within surgery.Support the training and development of junior pharmacists, pre-registration trainees, and other pharmacy staff within the surgical division.Qualifications and Experience
Registered pharmacist (GPhC) with experience in clinical pharmacy, preferably within surgical services.Ability to provide non-medical prescribing services within the surgical division as an independent prescriber (where relevant policies allow).Demonstrated leadership, mentorship, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to optimise patient care.Additional Information
