About the student
We are seeking an experienced and patient 1:1 SEN Tutor to support a Year 11 student in Sheerness.
The student has a complex profile of Communication and Interaction, Cognition and Learning, and Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, including a diagnosed Language Disorder with moderate to severe receptive and expressive language difficulties.
He has previously found mainstream education challenging and can experience anxiety, frustration and emotional distress when faced with academic demands, uncertainty or situations where he feels misunderstood. He responds well to trusted adults and prefers 1:1 support. His interests include football, art, photography, computers, music, outdoor activities and motorbikes.
The role
The successful tutor will provide personalised 1:1 tuition in English and Maths, while helping the student rebuild confidence, engagement and positive experiences of learning.
The EHCP specifies that teaching should be highly differentiated and personalised, delivered at a level appropriate to his cognitive, language and literacy profile. It also requires staff to be trained and experienced in supporting communication, cognition and learning, SEMH and motor coordination needs.
You will be expected to:
Deliver engaging, personalised English and Maths tuition.
Build a consistent, trusting relationship with the student.
Use short, clear instructions and break learning into manageable steps.
Allow additional processing time and check understanding regularly.
Use visual supports, modelling, repetition and practical learning approaches.
Adapt tasks to reduce unnecessary writing demands.
Support the development of confidence, independence and help-seeking skills.
Recognise signs of anxiety, frustration or cognitive overload and respond calmly and appropriately.
Link learning to the student''s interests wherever possible.
Maintain clear records of engagement, progress and areas requiring further support.
Work collaboratively with the placement, family and relevant professionals where appropriate.
These approaches are specifically reflected in the student''s EHCP, including the use of visual supports, additional processing time, short chunks of language, task planners, modelling and practical learning.
About you
We are looking for a tutor who is:
Experienced in working with SEN/EHCP students, particularly those with communication and language needs.
Confident delivering GCSE or functional English and Maths at an appropriately differentiated level.
Patient, calm, consistent and emotionally attuned.
Skilled at building rapport with students who may have experienced difficulties in education.
Able to adapt teaching quickly according to the student''s presentation and needs.
Comfortable delivering tuition on a 1:1 basis.
Experienced in supporting students with SEMH, ASD/social communication differences and language difficulties.
Reliable and able to provide consistent support.
Experience of supporting students who have struggled to access mainstream education would be particularly relevant.
What the role offers
This is an opportunity to provide meaningful, individualised educational support while a permanent provision is being secured. The focus is not simply on academic attainment, but on helping the student re-engage with learning, develop confidence and build the skills needed for his future education and employment pathway.
If you are an experienced SEN tutor who can provide calm, consistent and personalised 1:1 support, we would like to hear from you.
